Para Swimming on the road to LA28

The 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles are getting closer—and the competition framework is becoming increasingly concrete.

The published schedule provides for six Para swimming sessions. Two heats sessions are followed by four finals sessions.

Publishing the programme early gives federations, coaches and athletes greater planning certainty.

At the highest level, competition planning begins long before the Games themselves. Qualification, international competitions, training camps and seasonal peaks can be coordinated well in advance.

Para swimming therefore remains a central part of the Paralympic programme.

Long-term planning begins well before the Games

The Paralympic Games are the culmination of a multi-year performance cycle. For athletes and coaches, every piece of early information about the programme and schedule is therefore valuable.

Depending on classification and the events on offer, it can be planned years in advance which disciplines will be the main focus and which international competitions make sense as intermediate steps.

Qualification itself also has to be integrated into the season plan. Peak form cannot be produced at will, particularly when travel and international championships are added to the calendar.

Para swimming demands a high degree of individualisation

In Para swimming, athletes differ not only by distance and stroke but also by functional conditions and classification. Training methods therefore need to be tailored carefully to the individual.

Technical solutions that are ideal for one athlete may be unsuitable for another. The same applies to start variations, turns and strength training.

The road to LA28 is therefore not simply about doing more training. The key task is to convert each athlete's available functional capacity into competition performance as efficiently as possible.
