An unbeaten season: Moesha Johnson wins every individual race

Australia's Moesha Johnson achieved something extraordinary in 2026: she won every individual women's race of the entire Open Water World Cup.

A perfect season sounds almost impossible in a tactically unpredictable sport. Wind, waves, body contact, currents and sprint decisions usually ensure that even favourites are eventually beaten in open water.

Yet Moesha Johnson completed a clean sweep of the World Cup in 2026.

She won the knockout sprint as well

On the final competition day in Setúbal, Johnson won the 3-kilometre knockout sprint, completing a season in which she won every individual women's World Cup race she entered.

That is what makes the series so remarkable. A 10-kilometre race demands different decisions from a knockout format with several rounds.

Dominance without a lane line

In the pool, a superior swimmer can deliver performance relatively independently of the competition. In open water, she must also react: who is leading the pack? Where is a gap opening? Which buoy should be attacked on the inside? When should the finishing sprint begin?

A winning streak across different venues therefore means more than consistently high endurance performance.

What coaches can learn from it

The story is not a training recipe. It does, however, show how broad the profile of a modern open-water athlete has to be.

Speed, robustness, orientation and tactical flexibility all have to work together. Looking only at a 1500-metre pool time captures only part of this performance capacity.

A perfect World Cup season is rare. That is exactly why it is such an interesting example of how physiological strength becomes true dominance only when combined with racing skill.

Consistency is especially difficult in open water

A single victory can be helped by daily form and the way a race unfolds. An entire winning streak across different locations and formats reduces that element of chance substantially. That is why Johnson's season has particular sporting value: she repeatedly had to solve new race problems.
