Masters competitions and elite world championships have usually been clearly separate worlds. Budapest 2027 is intended to change that picture.
World Aquatics announced that the Masters Championships will, for the first time, take place fully alongside the World Aquatics Championships. More than 8,000 Masters athletes from over 180 countries are expected.
Generations within the same event ecosystem

The Masters programme spans several aquatic sports. Swimming is scheduled for 3–9 July 2027, with open water already taking place on 29 and 30 June.
The idea is remarkable: world-class athletes at the peak of their careers and people who have practised their sport for decades will be part of the same major event.
What this could change for Masters sport
Masters sport sometimes suffers from the image of being a secondary recreational format. Organisational integration with the elite can change visibility, media interest and international perception.
At the same time, the distinctive character of Masters sport must be preserved. Former Olympians meet ambitious late starters, long-time club swimmers and people who only discovered competition later in life.
A strong image for swimming
That mixture could make Budapest particularly interesting. The event will then tell more than the story of who is currently the fastest swimmer in the world.
It will also show that competitive swimming does not end at 25 or 30. For clubs, that is an important message: a functioning swimming structure needs not only youth development and elite performance, but also a perspective for the decades that follow.
Logistics become a discipline of their own
More than 8,000 Masters athletes create enormous demands on entries, training times, accommodation and competition operations. Hosting the event alongside the elite will show how well a large intergenerational event can be scaled organisationally. It could become a model for future championships.
